tweetmeme_style = 'compact';tweetmeme_source = 'articlerich';Exmoor is a small national park in the southwest region of England. The area is very beautiful and has many historic and natural attractions. Unfortunately I only have room to discuss seven of them here.

The first one is the most obvious the scenery! From the picturesque little towns to the spectacular coastline, any direction you point your camera is the right one. The North Devon and Exmoor Walking Festival is held semi-annually in the spring and the fall. This year the dates are April 29th May 7th, and October 1st 4th. There are also both guided and unguided walks offered for any level of ability year-round. You might even see a Red Deer or rare Exmoor Pony.

The second reason to visit here appeals to those with a historical bent. Dunter Castle and its medieval village will take you back 1,000 years. There are approximately 350 prehistoric burial mounds and barrows to found on the Moor. Altogether there are over 1,000 castles, monuments and buildings of special interest to explore in the area with a total of 4,000 known archaeological sites.

Thirdly; the wide range of options for the more athletically inclined. These include the 56 mile Exmoor Cycle Route for bikers and 482 km of bridleways for horseback riding or trail running. Local lakes and rivers accommodate fishing and canoeing.

Reason four; Exmoor contains approximately 50 geocaches for you and your family to locate! Geocaching is a new high-tech treasure-hunting game now being played all over the world. For other activities that will appeal to the children, visit Butlins in Minehead for attractions and rides, the Falconry and Animal Farm near Porlock, or the Wildlife and Dinosaur Park in the Watermouth Castle area.

When you are ready to relax again hop on the steam-powered West Somerset Railway and sightsee in comfort. This is a good way to view the 20 miles of stunning scenery between Minehead and Bishop's Lydeard.

The sixth reason to visit the Exmoor area is that it gives you the chance to sample the local specialties! Whortleberry jam and a sausage made with whortleberries are on the top of the list. Other treats to be found are Nutcombe Chocolates, Tower Farms hand-made cheddar cheese, and organic meats from local farms like Hindon Farm and Home Farm. There are also three breweries, cider makers and a vineyard. The official Exmoor National Park website: www.exmoor-nationalpark.gov.uk/ is an excellent resource for planning an unforgettable trip.

The seventh and a major consideration for visiting Exmoor is the great selection of places to stay. There are over 300 hotels, inns, and B&Bs in and around the area. As of last count, 26 accommodations are designed to be easily accessible to those with disabilities.

Altogether, Exmoor is a great place to take a short break away from your daily routine or to have a whistle-stop, whirlwind tour. The fortunate will be able to return here often! If you are holidaying however then it is best to try to experience as much of the above as you can.

Debbie is a tour guide who operates in the UK. She is primarily based in Exmoor and also reviews accommodation, such as guesthouses and hotels that she stays at. For midweek breaks Exmoor, Debbie recommends, Highcliffe House, as it is set within Exmoor National Park.
